Hey, I’m Draco!
‘Uy’ skweyul! Good day!
My name is Draco Recalma, I am from the kwakwaka’wakw nation in Qualicum, which in the Hul’qumi’num language means “Where the dog salmon run”. I’m a new addition to the Project Respect team, but a dedicated volunteer since 2011. As recent graduate of Esquimalt High School, I am preparing to enter Camosun College for Indigenous Studies. Until the fall semester starts, however, I am spending my days happily in the Project Respect office, working alongside Mikayla! Outside the office, I am a sporadic but passionate swing dancer with a wild love for slam poetry as well. As a recent 2nd place winner of a prestigious national writing competition and recipient of a writing award, I have been dedicating more time to writing, because I figure if the Creator were to give me a sign, that was probably it. I also have a big passion (and a big stomach) for bannock. You give me bannock, I’ll like you forever. I’m feeling very honoured to be working alongside Alyx, Chaw-win-is, and Mikayla this summer to help make our community a more welcoming and inclusive one! Should you find yourself in the VSAC building, drop by and say hello! (if you happen to be carrying some bannock, that’s cool too).
